METALLURGICAL AND MATERIALS ENGINEERING
MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

Science (Discovery)
1.     The systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment
2.      An organized body of knowledge on any subject

Technology (Application)
1.      The application of  scientific knowledge for practical purposes
2.      The branch of knowledge concerned with applied sciences

Engineering (Technology + economics)
1.      The branch of science and technology concerned with the design and use of engines, machines and structures

Material
Any inanimate matter used for an engineer to practice his profession.
Anything which is (1) Man-made (2) Non-living (3) generally solid at ordinary temperatures

Metallurgy
A domain of materials science that deals with making, shaping and treating of metals/Alloys.                  Extractive (deals with Extraction of metals from ore)
Physical (deals structure – property correlation of metals
Mechanical (response of metals/Alloys to forces or loads

Classification of engineering materials

Metals:  A chemical element having certain characteristic properties like
1.       Excellent electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity
2.      Crystal structure in solid state
3.      Capable of being plastically deformed
4.      Ductility/ Malleability
5.      Luster (ability of reflecting all the light on it)

Alloys: Combination of two or more chemical substances in which at least one should be a metal and possess metallic properties
Polymers : Materials containing long organic chains / network.

Ceramics : Contain metallic and non-metallic elements combined with a chemical bond (Ionic or covalent) and typically processed or used at high temperatures

Composites : Engineered or naturally occurring materials made from two or more constituent materials which have better properties than individual constituents.
